Somerset Levels and Yarner Wood, April 2011 PDF Print E-mail

Pied flycatcherI had a busy day today, starting on the Levels with another try at the lesser yellowlegs and another go at getting decent shots of the yellow wags at Tealham Moor.  Neither of the intended targets played ball but I was pleased to get my first ever garden warbler at Shapwick Heath and a nice buzzard shot on the moor.

A birder from Gloucester had recommended Yarner wood on the edge of Dartmoor as a great place for woodland birds so, as I had the time, I whizzed down the motorway and spent a very pleasant couple of hours looking for (and missing) lesser spotted woodpeckers and tree pipits.  Fortunately I had compensation with male and female pied flycatchers, my first ever wood warblers and a great spotted woodpecker chucking sawdust out of a nesthole.

Back up the motorway and time for another look at Shapwick.  Sure enough the lesser yellowlegs was 400 feet away again and possibly asleep on the mud.  I messed about taking pictures of little egrets and when I looked again, the 'legs had flown but fortunately for me, very much closer.  I managed a long series of shots as it walked and waded towards me and then along the mud in front of me before taking flight and going to the far right corner again to hang out with the godwits.
